SKIN REGIME

The Largest Organ

of the Body

The skin is the largest organ of the body and it needs to be taken care of just as much as other internal organs as it is often your first line of defence against free radicals. The skin can absorb many chemicals into the bloodstream so it is of utmost importance to make sure that what you are adding to the skin is safe. Everyone should have some form of skin regime and this regime will change throughout the years as your skin changes through the natural process of life and the environment.

Sun creams with high sun protection factors (SPF's) should be used daily to protect the skin all year round - UV rays damage the skin even in winter time, not just in the summer.

A basic skincare regime should at the very least consist of a cleanser to clean away daily make up and dirt and grime from the environment, a tonic to tone the skin, remove all traces of cleanser and prepare the skin by re-balancing the skins PH ready for moisturisers and serums and finally a moisturiser to nourish and protect.

A more sophisticated regime would also consist of an intense treatment such as a mask or serum and a facial exfoliant.

SKIN TEST

Do you really know Your Skin Type?

Many of us think we know exactly which skin type we are but quite often we are wrong. It is not uncommon to have more than one skin type at the same time, in fact the majority of people find they have combination skin with dry areas on the cheeks and an oily T zone. To find out your skin type you can use the following method.

Method: Wash your face but do not apply any cosmetics or make up. Leave for a few hours then take a piece of thin tissue in your hands, apply to your face and press firmly;

Once you know your skin type, check below to see which products suit your skin. It goes without saying that all products should be harsh chemical free. Please also remember, the skin type on your body is normally different to the skin type on your face!

The following information is in reference to skin types not skin disorders such as eczema, psoriasis, rosacea and acne etc

Findings

  • Nothing on the tissue - Dry skin

  • A slight residue - Normal skin

  • Residue from the T-zone (forehead, nose and chin) - Combination skin.

  • More residue than above or a facial imprint - Oily skin

Please note, if you also have sore skin or tend to have allergies to certain products then you have sensitive skin. Sensitive skin is usually accompanied by dryness and tightness. Remember you are probably more than one skin type.

PATCH TEST

It is impossible to create skincare products which everyone will tolerate, particularly in view of the fact that people's sensitivities have increased throughout the years. Contrary to what a lot of people believe, anyone can have a reaction to any cosmetic, in fact some people are allergic to water - just because a product is natural and organic it is not to say you cannot have a reaction to that product - but side effects with these types of ingredients are typically less prevailent.

Through testing products on the area of skin in the crook of the elbow - where the skin is thinner and more sensitive - you can, through this simple method, determine whether or not you are likely to be sensitive to what you have applied. This, of course, should be done with any products you purchase and it is particularly important to do this with anything you intend to use on your face.

The whole Roots range contains Prebiotic Chicory Root which is suitable for the most sensitive skins, hence not only lessens the chance of any reaction, but also lessens the severity if a reaction were to occur.

Method -

For leave on products such as moisturisers choose an area in the crook of your elbow of a few square centimeters and apply the product you wish to test. Leave for 48 hours and then look for any signs of allergic reaction. Signs of an allergic reaction include red, warm skin, perhaps also itchy and/or with a rash. If you do find an allergic reaction, that is possibly a reaction to just one ingredient not the whole product. Cease using the product, clean the area with soap and warm water and seek medical attention if needed. For wash off products such as cleansers apply the product to the crook of the elbow and leave for 30 seconds then RINSE OFF as these products are not designed to be left on the skin. Always leave 7 days between trials for the skin to relax. If you have an allergic reaction your skin may become sensitive to other ingredients you may not usually have a problem with, your skin becomes sensitized..
